Sad news: Grammer's on fire in OTR

Breaking news from Joe Wessels-- Grammer's is on fire. Another report from the scene says that firefighters are dousing the place with water to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings.

Other reports are that there are buildings on fire near Findlay Market.

UPDATE: 5:05 Furniture store near Findlay, and parts of the north side of the market on fire. This is devastating.

Stay safe, folks.

Update: Monday, 10:03 AM Official word from the CFD is that fire started at 1801 Elm Street and burning debris hit other buildings, causing fires. 1801 Elm, according to Google, includes Gibb's Cheese Shop (though their retail outlet is in the main market building). I drove by Grammer's myself and can see that there's not a whole lot of roof left. Very sad.

My power is still out in OTR, and I hope everyone is safe and staying that way.

Right now, WLWT is reporting that while buildings north of the Market were damaged, the market itself was untouched by the fire and relatively undamaged by winds.

When I drove by, I saw damage to stores considered part of the market-- the main market house seemed fine, but I'm worried about Market Wines, Silverglades, Angelina's, etc.

...And Julie, I couldn't get over to the buildings that were on fire for very long. I was there early on, but police arrived soon and moved all of us away.

It appears the tops of the buildings - hard to tell which ones - that include some of the stores you mentioned were directly hit. How much that effects those on the first floor, I don't know.

I am wondering the same thing, Joe. By the time I got there (around 8:30-9) there was one lone police car. I didn't stop, just glanced.

Julie, sorry that you appear to be off the downtown grid. I would be curious to hear how long it takes to get it back on. I talked with Jim at Grammer's yesterday and the Rathskeller is soaked and the top two floors need structural replacement, but the historic north building is pretty undamaged. Plus the new owners do have insurance...

Citykin-- I'll let you know when I get electricity back. I don't think that one transformer going to a dozen buildings is a huge priority. Ah, well.

Thanks for the update on Grammer's, too. Glad to know they have insurance, and very glad that the north building is OK. I could only see the damage to the top of the southern building from my vantage point-- upper floors needing structural replacement makes sense with what I saw.

I hope everyone is safe. Julie, hope your power is back, we never lost it fortunately. Hated to hear about Grammers, I used to hang out in the Rathskeller.

Major damage in Covington, No more shade in front of Keystone, lots of big trees down from second street south. There are six big trees within 75 feet of what was our second floor deck green tree-house, not so green any more. Good news is the two huge ones closest to the house suffered no damage, a huge pine and a big male mulberry. As to the rest it was like watching a slo mo train wreck. First a huge catalpa just north of us went, then the neighbors to the south lost their pear. An 8 inch branch came off our pear on to the fence and took out part of the garden, got the chain saw out and quickly cleaned up only to watch the same tree drop a 12" branch in the exact same spot and break a big granite bench in half. Figured it was time to retreat and watched the cherry over in the garden loose a huge branch, then the fence went. Only good news we will have more sun.

re: Grammer's

The rathskellar is totaled and will be closed down. The building will come down but they'd like to keep the facade.

They're cleaning up the main building and putting in a new bathroom. They would like to re-open in two weeks.

The Grammer's management acknowledged great work by the CFD to contain a fire that could easily have burned the main building.
